Skylights provide the more than nine metres tall hall with daylight. Spanning across the space, reinforced concrete beams support the precast concrete ceilings.
In the mornings, the homeless individuals need to vacate the rooms. In the daytime café, they can enjoy coffee and sandwiches sourced from food do nations.
Tipping the pretensioned slab sections leads to a change in the load path, wich concentrates along the lower edge.
The planning team dissolved the horizontal organization and detached entire ceiling sections from their bearings.
Holes in the walls resulting from formwork anchors remain open.They are reinforced with steel pipes, servingas flexible hangers for pictures, showcases and shelving.
On the upper floors, sections of the floor slabs are repurposed as trestles that support a tabletop made of recycled wood.
Thirteen designs created by pupils were developed into derivates by Marlene Braun and Olin Petzold (below). They were the basis for the final design with its open spatial fabric, ­integrated trees, and solid walls.
From floor to floor, the construction and weight of the tables consisting of pretensioned ceiling slabs changes: On the ground floor, two long strips are stacked.
The small building demonstrates how ­contemporary earthen construction can become a call for using the archaic natural ­construction material.
