Pop-Up House in Madrid
The adaptation of one-time family flats to the needs of singles and couples calls for entirely new living concepts. The solution adopted by TallerDE2 for the conversion of a four-room 1950s flat involved a full strip-out and reconfiguration with lightweight fittings. Despite its prime, central location in Madrid's Avenida de Valladolid, overlooking a park, the apartment was completely outdated in terms of energy standard and services installations. The architects removed the internal partitions, replaced the windows, lined the interior with mineral-wool insulation and installed a new underfloor heating system. Indirect, ceilingedge LED strips and recessed downlights provided background lighting. TallerDE2 used the open plan to piece together a 3D jigsaw of 54 modules (storage, kitchen and bathroom) that are “activated” by doors, flaps and drawers. The mostly OSB-lined cubes meet the client's three main demands: visual order, integration into the architecture (avoidance of freestanding furniture), and flexible, efficient space use. Prior to conversion, only around half the floor area was free for circulation. This ratio is now 77 %.
